"The couple" - "Paret"

Pedro

Juni

Valpar planeras - Litter is planned

Juni (Ch Play A While Late Red Autumnhop Ale) took us bu surprise when she started her season months before earlier intervals and after a lot of thinking I have decided to mate her. Friday July third Juni and I will drive up to Stockholm to catch a ferry to Helsinki in Finland. Juni will be mated to an older gentleman by the name C´Mere Ack Ack. I saw Pedro some eight years ago for the first time when I judged the Finnish Whippet Club open show and Pedro in spite of his young age managed to be among the last five dogs entered. Pedro’s pedigree consists largely about the dogs and litters I had back in the nineties and he is a grandchild of my beloved Buddha (Ch Play A While XXXX) but also a grandchild of the exceptionally good brood bitch Ch Play A While Fantasiregn.

If everything goes as planned there will be puppies at the beginning of September.

The trip to Poland

The BIS judge going over Memma on the table
Just a few seconds before the placings were announced.

In the collection ring

A dachshound with a military rain coat.

Monica waiting in out tent for the finals

The shopping mall that was huge!!

A white pekingese in the group ring off course caught my attention!!

We forgot to bring a camera so all photos have been taken with my mobile, hence that poor quality in some of the photos!!

Friday I left home for Poland together with my friend Monica Thyrell who owns Memma’s (Ch Play A While Lady Orlando) sire Ch Adagio Ta Moko. I asked Monica early on if she thinks that it is important for her to celebrate Midsummer. Luckily for me, this so very important day for most Swedes, is not very important for Monica!! She would be happy to come along for the long drive to Poland! We started off early Friday morning towards Trelleborg, as we were going to catch the midday ferry to Sassnitz in Germany. I have never gone this route before and I was very much smitten by the Rügen island landscape. From my history books I knew this is old Swedish territory and next time I go this way I will have to stop in Stralsund that is on UNESCO’s list of heritages worth saving for the future.

Soon we left Rügen behind us and found the motorways towards Stettin were the show was going to take place. I had booked us a hotel room in Stettin and luckily all the hotel chains had their own big signs showing the way to the hotels. We fed Memma and took her for a walk and since Monica had never been in Poland earlier I thought we must try traditional Polish food so we went to a restaurant serving Polish food and had a lovely meal!! We went to bed early on so that we had the energy needed for a long day at the show. In the morning I asked a nice women in the reception about that football stadium the show was to be held so that we would find the way. No information was given by the show were to go (we are used to that in Sweden..). We ended up at a huge stadium but no dogs in sight…. What should we do, well I found a taxi and he drove in front of us to the smaller stadium and the dog show. Finding a parking place was not easy and in the end we had to park a long way from the show in a forest….
Whippets were later during the day so we cheered on some other Swedish friends also at the show.

Finally whippets entered the ring. Memma was not in a very good mood, probably because of the long journey but luckily when the show lead was around the neck and we entered the ring she was showing!!!! Soon I had a paper in my hand stating that Memma had won BOB and the CACIB so now the international title was secured and that is why we went to this show!!
After a couple of hours of waiting we went in to the group ring and soon the speaker announced that the whippet was the group winner!! Wow!! The judge who also judged Memma in the group turned around and said; NOW YOU HAVE TO COME BACK TOMORROW. We had booked a ferry back the night between Saturday and Sunday and we both had other arrangements Monday…… A friend helped us to rebook the boat for Sunday night and the club put us up (for free!!!) at the hotel were the judges stayed.

Sunday we slept long and then went to a huge shopping mall so that I could have some new clothes for the BIS final!! After that we went to the show. The weather was very nice but in a couple of seconds the rain was pouring down and I ran like a maniac to our car (again very far from the show…) for our show tent. Luckily the rain stopped in an hour and the sun was shining all through the finals. AS usual the BIS was last and we were called in group by group, so naturally Memma and I entered the ring last. Compared to the Swedish shows there were huge numbers of spectators that had stayed on to see the finals, mostly families enjoying the Sunday out. Judge Luís Pinto Teixeira from Portugal was placing the dogs according to his choice. Three placing were awarded and Memma went in as BIS-2 and that was very fun. Mr Teixeira said to me that Memma was absolutely stunning!!

We had to leave at once so we did not miss the ferry but finding the way out to the motorway was an adventure... But finally we found it and 12 hours later we were back home.
I recommend other to go and show in Poland and why not Stettin? The show was well organised and the city it self has a very interseting history worth while cheking out!!

BIS-2

Tillbaks hemma trött men glad!!
Back home tired but happy!!
Play A While Lady Orlando was shown this weekend with the intention that she would win one last CACIB to gain the international title at the Stettin show in Poland. She did win the CACIB at that was great but then she won the breed, the group!! We were supposed to have started traveling back home to Sweden Saturday after the show but we rebooked boats and so on and stayed until Sunday and the Best In Show. Memma did great winning BIS-2 only beaten by an exciting boxer!!
Judge all the way from the breed up to Best In Show was Luís Pinto Teixeira

Polen!!

BIS-final i morgon kväll. Memma är därmed nybakad internationell
champion.

Utställningar - Dog shows

Helgen handlade om utställningar i Tånga Hed. Lördag visade jag Memma (Ch Play A While Lady Orlando) under Åge Gjetnes och kom tvåa i championklass, men inget CK…….

The weekend as all about dogs shows at Tånga Hed in the southwestern parts of Sweden. Saturday I showed Memma (Ch Play A While Lady Orlando) under Åge Gjetnes. It was raining and a cold wind was blowing and Memma hates that so she was not looking good… She ended up second in the champion’s class but was not awarded CQ (champion quality) so the competition was soon over for Memma…. Sunday I worked as a ring steward out in the ring under Jessie McLeod and it was very fun and nice! Everything went find until we started the finals after a 30 minutes lunch break. “All hell broke loose” and the rain was pouring down and the sky was lit up by thunder and to be frank, it was frightening… Big congratulations to Michael Vikström whose Twyborn Lazy won best bitch, CC (CAC) and BIS at the Whippet Club specialty under Jessie!!

Even if I have not shown in a long while whippets connected to Play A While have done very well in different places lately. Last weekend the Finnish Whippet Club held its traditional specialties, one day being official and the second an Open show. The second day brother and sister Play A While Fazer och Play A While Iittala (both by Ch Forgetmenot Flying Star out of Ch Play A While Late Red Autumnhop Ale) won the intermediate classes and the dog “Fasu” ended up BIS intermediate and ended up third best dog in a huge entry.
BOS the second day was Ch Pipsqueak Forza Magica who is out of Ch Play A While Fantasiregn.
In Germany Betty Barkley Indian Lover ( by Play A While Whitstable Bay Ale) continues doing very well in Germany and in a few weekends he has won 4 CAC (CC:s), one CACIB and one BOB.

BOB & BOS at the Irish Whippet Club specialty.
All these winners show around Europe seems to be my thing these days!! Last summer I showed my dogs at the World Show in Stockholm and in October my friend Linda and I drove all the way down to Hungary to participate in the European Winner Show in Budapest. Well Friday last week I set off for Ireland and Dublin, this time as a “tourist”, as the European Winner Show took place in Dublin this year. Claire Graham (Colloney whippets) was kind enough to pick me up at the airport so that I could see the bitches being judged at the extra Irish Whippet Club Show that was held in conjunction with the Winners show. I had heard that Irish people always show great hospitality and that was true. When the judging was over I was invited to take part in a lunch and loads of different food, wine and so on was placed on a table for everyone to enjoy!!! It was very nice and again thanks to all of you!! BOB Friday was Ch Collooney Golden Girl of Sheol who is also an English champion. BOS came all the way from Italy and he was Whiprose Irish Coffee at Sobers. Actually I think three whippets entered were named Irish Coffee!!
After that I left the show ground and went for my hotel to meet my travelling companions Ulrika and Ulrika. The three of us had lots of very fun and giving days together in Dublin with dogs, food and a few Guinness!! Lots of laughter!!
Saturday morning it was time for the whippet judging. For being the European Winner Show the entries were very low and that was not surprising as the costs to travel with dogs to Ireland are very high!! 54 whippets were entered and the judge was Göran Bodegård, these days an all round judge but from the sighthound group from the beginning. As no critiques were done the judging did not take long….
BOB this day was a Barnesmore dog residing in Jersey. His full name is Barnesmore Trick Or Treat (Ch Barnesmore Galileo X Ch Barnesmore Black Orchid) and is owned by Mrs Mottershaw who judged at the sighthound show in Sweden in January this year (not whippets). He went on to group 4 under Andrew Brace. BOS was a bitch that Göran had given the breed earlier on and she was Ch Mossbawnhill It’s All about Me (Ch Looricbrook Trussardi at Shalfleet X Collooney Mamma Mia). These two won the titles and the CACIB. As usual when it comes to whippets these days it was a truly international background in the ones entered. The sire of the BOB dog is bred in Northern Ireland but lives in Italy and has a sire from Sweden. The BOS winner has a sire from Canada residing in the UK of mainly American breeding and a dam sired by a dog from Sweden with Australien/American background and so on, and on…. This was the same for a lot of the entered whippets!
Sunday we spent most of the day on a beautiful lawn at a show organized by The Kennel Club for the native Irish breeds. It was a very nice show with lots of beautiful dogs and a very relaxed atmosphere. Unlucky for me I did not feel that the sun was quite “aggressive” in the wind so I ended up looking like a crayfish…. It was nice seeing the chairman of The Kennel Club Ronnie Irving being “on the floor” functioning as a ring steward. To me it is so interesting that such a small country as Ireland can have so many extremely distinct breeds of such a variety of type!
Monday I spent some time watching a couple of the toy breeds before joining my friends at the labrador ring. Then I had to go for the airport and go home again.
The size of this show was like a “normal” all breed show in Sweden and I felt sorry for the organizers that not more people took the effort to go to Ireland. On the downside the finals in the afternoons were very badly organized so in the end we and many more around the ring lost interest and left. The puppies came in to compete and were placed and then it could be a break of up to 20 minutes before the next final was called in to the green carpet. Maybe we are spoiled here in Sweden that the finals are always so very well organized? The finals were organized in FCI fashion so all this was probably all new to the Irish and maybe that caused the problems?
Saturday afternoon I went by the fox terriers to have a look at the wires and saw this extremely breathtaking bitch winning BOB and in the end she won BIS. She is the dog I will always remember from this show!!! I fell in love!!
The only downside of going to Dublin I feel is the prices. It is very expensive and digs big holes in your wallet… The only thing I find more expensive in Sweden is taxis.
Thanks to my two travel companions Ulrika and Ulrika who made this memorable trip!
